Lizards need love, too! So do snakes, turtles, frogs, toads and salamanders. You may think these animals are creepy, but that might just be due to a lack of positive experiences. So, come learn more about these slimy and scaly critters and the good they do at Prairie State Park’s Hug a Herp Day.
Park representatives will help dispel myths and rumors about reptiles and amphibians (collectively known as “herps”), while letting visitors see them up close and touch them if they're so inclined. Not brave enough to touch one? Then you can make an amphibian or reptile craft to take home instead. All activities are free and open to the public, and there is no need to register. For more information, call 417-843-6711.
Due to the unique and rare diversity of life preserved at Prairie State Park, pets are not allowed on park trails except for Path of the Earth People and Path of the Sky People. Bison graze freely in the park and this regulation protects both guests and their pets. Pets are welcome in the park’s campground and picnic area, but they must follow Missouri State Parks’ pet rules. This applies to all types of pets except service animals assisting guests with disabilities.
