at Battle of Athens State Historic Site

The Des Moines River Ravines Natural Area within the site contains relics of glacial times such as snow trillium and doll's eyes, plants that bloom in early spring. Throughout the park, wildflowers abound. The riparian environment afforded by the Des Moines River and streams running into it are attractive to a variety of wildlife and birds. A scenic overlook located within the historic area as well as trails throughout the park provide access for wildlife and bird viewing. The site contains a small prairie adjacent to the Athens Lake.
