11/16/2024 | Arrow Rock State Historic Site | Arrow Rock, MO
Historian and author Michael Dickey will present an overview of the history of the Missouria Tribe (now known as the Otoe-Missouria Tribe), from which the Missouri River and our state got their names. Using French and Spanish documents, archaeological data, and oral traditions of the Otoe-Missouria people and neighboring tribes, he will form a picture of the tribe’s material culture and general spiritual concepts. Dickey will also examine the tribe’s role in the Louisiana Territory; the impact of European culture and forced removal; and the status of the Missourias’ descendants, who are still with us and are not museum pieces.
The presentation is sponsored by Missouri Humanities and will take place in the visitor center at Arrow Rock State Historic Site. It is free and open to the public, and there is no need to register. For more information, call the site office at 660-837-3330.
