Transit of Mercury

5/9/2016 | Missouri State Museum | Jefferson City, MO

An uncommon celestial event, the Transit of Mercury, will occur on May 9. The transit is a sort of micro-eclipse in which the planet mercury passes directly between the earth and the sun. Due to differences in size, Mercury will appear as a small round dot crossing the sun. Special glasses, filters or cameras will be needed to view the transit safely. The transit begins near sunrise and will conclude before 1:45 p.m.

The Missouri State Museum will host a safe viewing event on the south lawn of the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City beginning at 9 a.m., weather permitting. Join staff between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to view the transit.  This is a “drop in” event, so come by any time during the morning or early afternoon. Click here to read the news release.
