Visitor Center and Museum

Exhibits inside the museum. The visitor center is where you will want to start your discovery tour of the Watkins Woolen Mill complex. A short orientation program and exhibits will enhance your visit to this National Historic Landmark and National Engineering Landmark. Entrance to the visitor center is free. Guided tours of Watkins Woolen Mill and Watkins House are available for a nominal fee. The visitor center is accessible and includes restrooms, a souvenir sales counter and a beverage vending machine. In addition, the museum also includes climate-controlled storage facilities for the historic site's archives and artifact collections and a conservation and exhibit work area.

From April through October, the visitor center is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

From November through March, the visitor center is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Guided tours start on the hour. Visitors must be with a tour guide to enter the woolen mill and house.

Exterior of the visitor center and museum. Tours are limited to 15 people per group because of space and floor load.

Group tours may be scheduled on weekdays by calling 816-580-3387 two weeks or more in advance. Fees are discounted for pre-scheduled groups with 15 or more fee-paying members ($1.50 for adults and $.75 for children 6-12).

Pets are not allowed in the visitor center, on the grounds of the historic site or in the historic buildings.
