Birds
Weston Bend State Park and the surrounding Missouri River valley offer diverse habitats for birders to explore, including old fields, bottomland forests, wetlands and mesic woodlands. There are 179 species found within the park, as well as Fort Leavenworth, Kan., the Missouri River and a five-mile radius of Sherman Army Field. The count is based on the original work of Ted Mouras and John Schukman, but includes the 1999 breeding bird survey conducted by Christopher Hobbs and John Schukman. Some of the most common birds you can view at the park are grebes, goldeneye, heron, mallard, wood duck, teals, pintails, hawks, bald eagle, golden eagle, kestrels, chukars, pheasants, wild turkey, sandpiper, woodcock, dove, owl, nighthawk, flycacher, buntings, oriole, finch, sparrow and goldfinch.
