Individual Volunteer Opportunities

Campground hosts help with many activities, such as public surveys.Interpreter
As an interpreter, you would assist in presenting interpretive programs, which help visitors discover and understand the natural surroundings or the state’s historic past. The greatest need for interpreters is during the spring and summer season. Volunteers in this capacity will undergo training from staff.

Park/Site Aide
As a park/site aide, you would assist full-time staff in the daily operations of a facility during the summer and other high-use periods. Work may include providing information to the public, cleaning rest rooms, mowing grass and collecting litter.

Trail Worker
Trail workers assist park personnel in all aspects of trail construction and maintenance. This can be done individually or in small groups. Work may be done year-round, but springtime is the best season.

Katy Trail Volunteer
Katy Trail State Park is built on the former corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) Railroad. Duties may include trail watch, interpretation, trail maintenance, resource management, special event coordination or working at greeter booths. Katy Trail volunteers are expected to give at least four hours of service per month.

Special Event Volunteer
More than 100 special events are held in Missouri state parks and historic sites each year. These events are great for individuals or groups looking for short-term, limited duration projects. Events might include nature programs, concerts, historical arts and crafts festivals, fishing tournaments, park cleanups and dedications. Generally, you would help with registration, setup and teardown, information booths, and planning and coordination.

Park Beautification
Assistance with litter clean up, painting and gardening is always needed in the parks. Native plant restoration projects and exotic plant removal are popular ways to volunteer.

Campground Hosts
As a campground host, you serve as a “live-in” ambassador for a facility. You will perform a variety of tasks, including greeting visitors and handing out information, replacing restroom supplies, cleaning campsites, picking up litter, and letting park staff know about potential problems. Campground hosts set an example by being model campers, practicing good housekeeping and obeying all rules and regulations. You live in your own recreational vehicle (RV), motorhome or trailer on a special campground host campsite provided in exchange for your service. Because you would serve as the official greeters, you should like people and be willing to be courteous, outgoing and helpful to people of all ages. You also need to be physically capable of completing duties and willing to volunteer varied days and hours. Campground hosts are asked to serve up to 40 hours per week for a minimum of one month. This time commitment can be split between spouses.
