Hikers' Comments on Radiant Trail
Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site
| Month Hiked | Comments from participants of the 2007 Trail of the Month Program | |
| September 2007 | The best thing about my hike was trying to catch the grasshoppers as they were flying by. | |
| September 2007 | The best thing about my hike was the meadow. The worst was being out in the sun for so long. | |
| September 2007 | Nice trail. Easy to find and to stay on. Varies in what you see and is not difficult as far as inclines. Some loose rock but for the most part solid. Met a couple on the trail that was not familiar with this program. Told them about it and where to get the booklet. | |
| September 2007 | I enjoyed the hike through the woods, but it was really hot in the open areas where there was no shade. At one point, there were flowers covered with butterflies -- that was pretty to see. | |
| August 2007 | Take water and watch your step. Parts of the trail are irregular with rocks and brush stubs to trip you. Gives the trail a nice primitive touch although you need to be careful. Other than that, it’s a very pretty trail, makes a nice three-mile loop through forests, glades and field. | |
| July 2007 | This is a well worn, easy hiking trail, even though it is three miles long. It's mostly wooded with parts of the trail going through open prairies. | |
| July 2007 | This trail was well maintained and provided a combination of shady and open areas in which to hike. The trail wasn't too difficult. You just need to watch your step with the tree roots and loose rocks in the path. We saw a turtle, which was a highlight for my daughter! | |
| July 2007 | Great trail - would love to go again with a bike. Through woods and open fields. Mostly shaded. Narrow paths and don't forget the bug spray. Loved it!! | |
| July 2007 | I liked this trail a lot. It was pretty level; no steep hills to climb. The trail was marked every .5 miles. It makes the trail seem shorter when you know how far you've come and how fat left to go. It alternated between woods and fields, which made it interesting. I loved the wildflowers, especially the wild bergamot. The butterflies loved them, too. | |
| June 2007 | We were surprised to be sharing this trail with bicycles. We saw wildflowers everywhere and there were still some May apples to be seen. Also, there were giant round mushrooms along part of the trail. | |
| June 2007 | This is a beautiful trail through the woods and open hay fields. I really enjoyed it. However, it is mainly a mountain bike trail, so it was narrow -- we had to walk single file -- and there must have been a thousand small (1-3 inch diameter) tree stumps on the trail. We spent most of our time looking down at our feet and couldn't enjoy the scenery as much as I'd like. Also, be sure to use PLENTY of bug spray as the ticks were horrible. Also, there is a lot of poison ivy all along and on the trail. Sorry to make it sound bad; it really is a lovely trail. Be sure to leave time to tour the house - it is really neat. | |
| June 2007 | This is a pretty trail. I found it very distracting however, to have to watch for the many tree stumps in the trail. At one point I was looking at the scenery and tripped and fell on a stump. OUCH! | |
| June 2007 | This trail is great! It is unpaved but very diverse. You will walk through woods with lots of rocks along the path, open meadows with lots of wildflowers and by a pond. Watch out for small tree stumps that have been cut along the path. I was so busy looking around that I tripped on a couple. We had lots of fun on this trail looking at all of the turtles. Enjoy! | |
| June 2007 | Great winding path through the thick woods into an open field and back to the woods again. A very challenging hike, with rocks of all sizes, small tree stumps and roots as part of the trail. It was everything I believe a trail should be. I very much enjoyed the trail, but may not be for everyone. There is only one rest stop midway. | |
| May 2007 | There were lots of Mayapples and red cedar; the trail was very rocky in parts. The meadows were pretty. We saw a beaver, deer, two turtles on the trail, lots of spiders, and heard bull frogs. We really enjoyed this trail! | |
| May 2007 | Seventy-five percent shady hike. Went through meadows that had white daisies galore and also saw a lot of blue-eyed grass flowers. Two box turtles and several lizards shared the trail with us, as well as a black snake. The frog pond was very peaceful, calm. | |
| May 2007 | Mostly shady hike. Saw several reptiles. I really appreciated the bench at the frog pond about half way through the hike. Like to see more benches along the state parks' hikes. | |
| May 2007 | Very nice trail, well maintained. |
