Hikers' Comments on Bicycling and Hiking Trail
Watkins Woolen Mill State Park and State Historic Site
| Month Hiked | Comments from participants of the 2007 Trail of the Month Program | |
| September 2007 | This was a long, hot trail. This was our fourth hike of five for the day. We were hiking after lunch on a 95-degree day. Our poor dog got overheated and refused to take another step as we were walking across the dam. I would recommend either riding a bike on this one, or hiking in October when the weather is cooler! | |
| August 2007 | After visiting the wonderful museum exhibits, we had a very nice bike ride around the lake. | |
| August 2007 | I wish I would have brought a bike with me. I had on hiking boots and it killed my feet. Besides that, the lake looked nice. | |
| July 2007 | It's such a pretty park to ride your bike or to walk. We have been on this trail many times with the kids and now the grandkids. We use to have to coach them along. Now its hurry up granny and papa. It is so peaceful with lots of flowers, birds, trees, deer and rabbits. Lots of fishermen and swimmers were out enjoying the lake. | |
| July 2007 | Enjoyed riding my bicycle on this trail. Lots of pretty flowers, deer and rabbits. Also, lots of fishermen and swimmers on the lake. | |
| July 2007 | This trail seemed very long and it was really hot and muggy. Good advice to walk counter-clockwise on the trail -- the view of the lake is great, but the trees were really nice to walk under in the middle of the day. | |
| July 2007 | Excellent for small kids to bike! Beautiful lake; very smooth paved trail; pretty bridges. A lot of fun! We will go back! | |
| July 2007 | This is a nicely paved trail. It is a huge loop around the lake. We were pressed for time and walking really fast. It would have been a lot more fun at a leisurely pace. Give yourself plenty of time to hike the 3.8 miles. | |
| July 2007 | This is a very nice, easy bike ride with beautiful scenery. Lots of bunnies were scampering about this evening and a few squirrels. At one point, a couple of deer crossed the trail just ahead of me. | |
| July 2007 | This trail is longer than most of the trails on this program. Make sure to allow plenty of time. I would also recommend doing it when it is cool outside. It goes around a lake, and when I was there I wished I had the time to swim at the swimming beach. | |
| July 2007 | Leisurely route along the beautiful lake. Mostly canopied trail. The lake was tempting for a dip and maybe even to cast a line but alas, more trails to cover today! | |
| July 2007 | It was a great trail and me and Dad had a fun time. We walked for a long time. We found snails and other things like centipedes and stuff. All I know is that we had a great time and I hope we never walk that far again because that was very far. | |
| July 2007 | A very long paved trail looping a beautiful lake. It was an enjoyable hike bustling with activity -- people enjoying a swim in the lake, people fishing, but today was a very hot and humid day. A thunderstorm was trying to pass through. | |
| June 2007 | This was a very shady and level paved hike. On a hot day, start at the beach parking lot and go to the right to get the sunny part out of the way first. Saw a mother thresher luring me away from her baby who had mistakenly landed on the trail. Be sure to take the mill tour -- very interesting. The personnel outdid themselves. We LOST our Trail of the Month brochures on a picnic table and after about four hours returned to find them gone. The park ranger was extremely helpful in getting them to us after he was off duty. We do appreciate his efforts as we did not want to rehike our 14 hikes!! | |
| May 2007 | This is a great hiking and bicycling trail for people of any age! The paved trail is mostly level with a few slight inclines here and there, but nothing too tough to handle. There's plenty of parking and places to access the trail, and there's even direct access to the campground. My wife and I have already biked this trail several times this year, and we love to keep coming back! Take it slow along the east side so you don't miss the clue like we almost did, and don't forget to stop and check out the neat waterfall near the northwest edge of the lake. | |
| May 2007 | Be aware of bicycles and try to go during the week. It was very busy the Saturday I hiked. All paved and most had good shade. Great lake views. | |
| May 2007 | I hiked this trail on a nice day in May. It's an all paved trail. Very nice views of the lake. | |
| May 2007 | Nice paved trail. Great lake views, and heavily wooded sections that provided some great shade and scenery. Slight elevation shifts and a couple of wooded bridges added to the fun. | |
| May 2007 | Very well shaded, wide asphalt trail, with a great view of the lake. |
