Hikers' Comments on Clark's Hill Trail
Clark's Hill/Norton State Historic Site

Month Hiked Comments from participants of the 2007 Trail of the Month Program
Comment: October 2007 The hills were tough but the river view was worth it! Never would have known about the burial mounds in this area so that was an added perk.
Comment: September 2007 This is a challenge if you like hill climbing. The view is spectacular at the end. The park was a little hard to find.
Comment: September 2007 Last walk of the day … walked quickly up the trail to view the river and valley at twilight. Interesting educational and informational signs along the way.
Comment: September 2007 The trail appears to be very narrow at the onset, however, once around the bend it opens up to a nice wide trail. It is hilly, so take your time and enjoy the surroundings. It is really breathtaking at the overlook to be above the trees and to have the beautiful view of the Missouri River. We were actually looking down at a hawk flying around over the treetops below us.
Comment: September 2007 Informative with several interpretive signs and a nice deck to pretend you're William Clark by looking out at the Osage confluence with the Missouri.
Comment: August 2007 It takes you back in history. I imagined what it was like for William Clark. I also thought about the great Osage leaders who were buried in the mounds.
Comment: August 2007 I can honestly tell my kids that this trail is uphill both ways!!! However, the view is worth the uphill effort. I really enjoyed the information about the Indian burial mounds. I would not have recognized them without the signs.
Comment: August 2007 The view is beautiful, especially from the lookout deck. We also really enjoyed the informative signs and seeing the Indian mounds. It is somewhat strenuous up and down a few steep hills, but the trail is short enough that it's not too bad.
Comment: July 2007 Great view of the rivers, especially after the leaves fall. Take some water. The trail is pretty but somewhat strenuous for us old timers.
Comment: July 2007 On this trail you will see several Indian burial mounds and great views of the Missouri and Osage rivers.
Comment: July 2007 The best thing about my hike was that I found a snakeskin in the middle of the trail; it was so cool!
Comment: July 2007 An invigorating shady hike with good uphill slopes. The views of the Missouri River and its outlining areas were spectacular! We could see the Osage River through the trees, too, shortly after turning back. It was definitely worth taking this hike for us. We saw one deer and many deer tracks.
Comment: July 2007 Somewhat of a strenuous hike. The benches that were placed at the top of both hills were placed well! The informational signs were very interesting to read. The view from the deck at the end of the trail was great.
Comment: June 2007 This trail has two of the steepest hills we've climbed yet, but the benches were conveniently located at the top of each hill. The view from the lookout was better last fall when the trees had dropped some of their leaves.
Comment: June 2007 Bring DEET if doing during mosquito season or wear long pants/sleeves. Good info signs on Lewis and Clark. You go up hill and back down (of course). Bit muddy. Nice views but would be even better when the leaves are thinner or off or in the fall.
Comment: June 2007 Nice overlooks of the Missouri river and interesting facts along the way. However, I went in the late afternoon and the mosquitoes were bad.
Comment: May 2007 Beautiful trail! I will go back again; it smelled wonderful with all of the honeysuckle around. Need to watch small children carefully near the edges of the trail at the top. Nice scenery looking over the river.
Comment: May 2007 Overgrown trail and no amount of bug spray will help with the swarms of mosquitoes. I have never seen so many mosquitoes in my life.
Comment: May 2007 Beware of the mosquitoes! The interpretive signs along the trail were very informative.
Comment: May 2007 The deck lookout at the end of the trail is worth hiking for, providing an obstruction-free view of the Missouri River Valley. It had rained recently, making several areas of this trail treacherous and slick with mud. Bring insect repellent, as mosquitoes were plentiful.
Comment: May 2007 The trail was very steep. Nice view.
Comment: May 2007 I will want to go back in the fall when all the leaves have changed. There is a great view of river and the valley below.
Comment. May 2007 Beautiful views of a very full Missouri River. The hill is easy to go down but quite strenuous going back up, luckily there was a bench at the top. The undisturbed Indian burial mounds were especially interesting.
