Hikers' Comments on Arrow Rock River Landing Trail
Arrow Rock State Historic Site

Month Hiked Comments from participants of the 2007 Trail of the Month Program
Comments. October 2007 We started at the Visitor's Center and walked through the town before starting the trail. Very peaceful and quiet hiking this trail.
Comments. October 2007 Glad we asked at the visitor center which way to go. To get to the river you need to make a right on the Discovery Trail.
Comments. September 2007 The best part of the trail is the town it's in. I loved Arrow Rock! I think the population is 79. Most of the buildings are mid 1800s and beautifully well kept.
Comments. September 2007 I would not have found this trailhead if I hadn't asked at the visitor center. Thankfully it was open. The hike itself was quite pretty, especially once we got to the river. This was our first of nine trails hiked over Labor Day weekend. I would like to come back when I have more time and explore the town.
Comments. August 2007 We did the trail and had a nice lunch in town. Seeing and purchasing the Lewis and Clark stamps at the active post office was like going back in time.
Comments. August 2007 This was a gorgeous trail with lots of butterflies.
Comments. August 2007 It was an early morning walk along the Missouri. Hard to believe these waters came all the way from Montana and will end up in the Gulf. Nice benches to rest on as we listened to birds singing as we walked along.
Comments. August 2007 This trail is a mile long on an old levy with a short trail connecting it to the park to form a T. Pick up a brochure and map with a guide to the six numbers along the trail. You will be walking where the Missouri River was when Lewis and Clark were here.
Comments. July 2007 A nice rock trail for the majority of the trail. Walking along the levee was like walking alone an old country road with a canopy of trees overhead and into the distance.
Comments. July 2007 This trail wasn't too strenuous. It was well maintained and provided a nice level walk. It was interesting to see how the river had changed the area after the spring floods. Since most of the trail is shaded, we stayed cool on our late afternoon walk. You could certainly feel the added humidity as we neared the river!
Comments. July 2007 Ask at the visitor's center for the location of the trail or you'll never find it. The clue was at the beginning of the trail, which is unusual. It was surprising when you came to the end of the trail and you're at the bank of the Missouri River. I think there were some eagles in a tree across the river. How I wish I had binoculars!
Comments. July 2007 No map brochures available at the trailhead to use in reference to the markers located randomly along the trail. Later I understood that these were supplied by locals instead of the DNR. Hiked to the Missouri River on a fairly easy trail. Would like to have seen the Rock of Arrows bluff as described on the information tablet located on the trail but the bluff is blocked by heavy summer vegetation; maybe there could be a small clearing in the future to make this observable.
Comments. July 2007 This was a beautiful trail. There was a lot of wildlife. It was nicely paved and very easy. This entire state historic site was very neat!!
Comments. July 2007 This was our second attempt at this hike. Was glad to see the new gravel on the muddy parts of the trail. This is a nice, easy, shady trail going both ways from the entrance on the levee. We saw Monarch caterpillars and lots of frogs and a deer. I very much enjoyed the information posters and will definitely come again in January to see the bluffs better. In the two minutes of trying to make an arrowhead, I found great respect for the Indians' abilities and patience. Eagerly awaiting the completion of the Jamestown Island Unit.
Comments. July 2007 This hike is for all ages. I would have liked to have had a brochure to explain the different sections that were marked. At the end of the trail I spent about 30 minutes sitting on a log just watching the Missouri River and relaxing. This is one of the more relaxing type of hikes. Saw one deer and several great blue herons.
Comments. June 2007 Part of the trail was closed due to flooding, but you could get to the clue from both ends. It was neat, but again...muddy. I love Arrow Rock; it is a neat place to visit. Great town; lots to see.
Comments. June 2007 Make sure to go on a dry, sunny day, and you will be able to hike all the way to the banks of the Missouri River without worry of the trail being flooded.
Comments. June 2007 Do not hike this trail after spring rains. We did not get to finish the trail due to the mud. Arrow Rock however offered a great deal of walking and was an interesting town.
Comments. May 2007 Very nice walk, owing to the fact that the trail was paved with gravel and well maintained.
