Hikers' Comments on Braille Trail
Elephant Rocks State Park
| Month Hiked | Comments from participants of the 2007 Trail of the Month Program | |
| October 2007 | This is one of our favorite parks. The granite rocks are amazing and the kids love to climb them. The trail is easy and paved, with lots to look at. I enjoy the narrative markers too. One of the best places to spend the day! | |
| September 2007 | This is a good park to spend a whole day if you have kids. It is an easy trail and kids would have no trouble walking this trail. We had been here when our kids were young; so since we had little time to spare we only walked the paved trail. | |
| August 2007 | I really liked this one. The huge granite rocks are neat to look at and climb on. I would also recommend visiting the engine house nearby. The grout and block work is very intricate. | |
| August 2007 | This is one of the most amazing trails in Missouri. The Elephant Rocks are unlike anything you'll see elsewhere. | |
| August 2007 | The best part about my hike was the giant piece of granite that was 37 feet tall and weighed 680 tons. | |
| August 2007 | It's definitely better to go during the week. The crowd was very light, and I was free to enjoy the trail at my own pace. | |
| August 2007 | This is one of the best trails I've ever hiked on! I recommended it to my friend (who is blind), and we will be returning very soon. It is one of the most beautiful trails I've ever seen. I highly recommend geologists take this trail especially. | |
| July 2007 | Be prepared to stray from the trail. What an amazing park! Our entire family had a blast climbing on the granite...Missouri Red granite that is. | |
| July 2007 | Awesome! The red granite boulders resemble other animals in addition to elephants. I also noticed a few lounging "walruses," "sea lions," "bears," and "birds." Just use your imagination and I'm sure you'll discover some more! | |
| July 2007 | Easy walk along the paved path. Liked having the short printed explanations to read as we progressed forward. Would very much like to make an Earthcache of this location since it has geologic significance.(See www.earthcache.org) | |
| July 2007 | The giant granite formations that have been transformed into “elephant rocks” through the process of erosion are fascinating. Make sure you read the interpretative signs that explain the formations. | |
| July 2007 | We were surprised they had added a spur trail leading to an old train engine house. It is very interesting and well worth the extra time. | |
| July 2007 | This is a trail that is designed for anyone and everyone would be able to enjoy. Every one should take the time to walk and enjoy this trail. | |
| June 2007 | This is a beautiful trail. A lot of work has gone into making this park enjoyable for everyone including the blind and handicap. Enjoyed the maze and fatboy squeeze along with all the elephant ear rocks. Very nice. | |
| June 2007 | Don't rush through this park. Take time to hike off the trail and explore the Elephant Rocks. | |
| June 2007 | Unusual landscape. Fascinating history. Wonderful idea to have a trail for the visually handicapped. | |
| June 2007 | This trail was extremely well cared for. The asphalt portions make it accessible to just about anyone. The granite boulders were amazing, as were the huge, jutting formations along the way. The information stations were very interesting. | |
| June 2007 | This is one of my favorite trails. I love the giant boulders spilled across the landscape like a giant's playthings. The frequent signs are informative. It's a delight. | |
| May 2007 | This trail is very family friendly. Parents with small children, handicapped people, or older adults will find this enjoyable. The overlooks were breathtaking and the clue was easy to locate. This was one of the best so far! | |
| May 2007 | The rocks are amazing. This is our third visit to this park and each time I am just amazed. The kids always love this hike and many adults are turned back into children as they climb the rocks and laugh along with the kids. | |
| May 2007 | It is a lot of fun to watch the kids climb around on the rocks. Very enjoyable trail. | |
| May 2007 | The rocks are cool. | |
| May 2007 | It feels longer than one mile because of all of the obstacles you come to, however it is incredible. | |
| May 2007 | Nice easy trail. The huge rocks around the trail make you feel like you're in a maze. My wife seems to like this one best, and my four-year-old loved the drinking fountains throughout. | |
| May 2007 | My boys loved this hike the best so far. Getting off of the trail and climbing on the rocks was great fun! | |
| May 2007 | This is a great trail to take the kids on, especially if you can go on a week day. It has great picnic areas and plenty of rocks for the kids to explore. The old engine house is very impressive and the information about the quarrying of the area is very interesting. The most interesting part of the park is the great rock formations. People of all ages will be impressed and amazed! Definitely worth the drive! | |
| May 2007 | It is an easy trail to walk. It is a lot of fun for young and old. It has a nice place to picnic and swings for the kids. | |
| May 2007 | It is fun for people who like to climb! | |
| May 2007 | Cool place. Other people think so, too. Most parks we have been to so far have been great and much less frequented than this park. It is popular for a reason. Some of the overlook scenes are reminiscent of Craters of the Moon in Idaho, so that was really cool. The old engine building was really impressive! I will definitely go back, but I will try for a weekday as opposed to the most beautiful weekend day thus far. | |
| May 2007 | Spectacular park with amazing geologic formations. The kids had a blast exploring every nook and cranny of this wonderful park. | |
| May 2007 | Go during the week to avoid crowds if you can, but be sure to go because even with the crowds it is worth seeing. |
