Ticks are unavoidable. They cling to your clothing when you walk or hike through any type of vegetation, especially along trails. This makes it easy to carry them home. Ticks are most abundant in the spring and summer and feed on the blood of animals, including humans. Their bites are nearly undetectable. The likelihood of becoming sick is slim; however, several illnesses are linked to bacteria that can be transmitted by a tick. The major diseases are Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, ehrlichiosis and Lyme.
