JEFFERSON CITY, MO., JULY 24, 2009 -- Not sure what to do with the kids until school starts? The Missouri State Museum will continue its "Tuesdays @ 2" programs at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays in August. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, these educational programs will take place in the first floor rotunda in the State Capitol and are free and open to the public.
The Missouri State Museum will offer a different program each week that will explore Missouri's cultural and natural history. The "Tuesdays @ 2" programs will cover the following topics:
- Aug. 4: "Show Me Missouri" -- Missouri is a geographic crossroads of natural landscapes. There are western prairies, eastern forests and southern swamps. Come see how the Department of Natural Resources makes use of this natural diversity to provide a variety of outdoor recreational experiences in state parks -- from modern recreational vehicle camping to primitive backcountry adventures. This program is appropriate for all ages.
- Aug. 11: "Pony Express" -- Loosen your reigns and learn about the legendary Pony Express. Explore why the mail delivery system was so important to the West and participate in a Pony Express activity. This program is appropriate for ages seven and up.
- Aug. 18: "Missouri State Symbols" -- Do you know what Missouri's state flower is? How about the state fossil or dessert? Enjoy learning about Missouri's state symbols through this interactive program. This program is appropriate for ages seven and up.
- Aug. 25: "Hootin' Howie" -- Have a hootin' good time at this hands-on owl program. Learn how the physical features of nocturnal birds help them hunt and survive. This program is geared toward ages four to 12.
The Missouri State Museum is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located inside the Missouri State Capitol at 201 W. Capitol Avenue in Jefferson City.
