EXHIBIT ON THE MISSOURI STATE PENITENTIARY
MOVES TO THE MISSOURI STATE MUSEUM IN THE CAPITOL
JEFFERSON CITY, MO, JAN. 4, 2008 -- Visitors to the State Capitol during 2008 will have the opportunity to see an exhibit on the former Missouri State Penitentiary. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has transferred portions of the exhibit on the former penitentiary from the Elizabeth Rozier Gallery at Jefferson Landing State Historic Site to the Missouri State Museum in the Capitol.
The exhibit, "A City within a City: The Missouri State Penitentiary, 1836-2004" includes information on the long history of the penitentiary as well as artifacts and images from that history. Due to space restrictions, some exhibit elements that were on display at the Rozier Gallery, such as the reproduction prison cell, were not moved to the Missouri State Museum. The exhibit will be on display through 2008 on the north side of the main rotunda.
The Missouri State Museum is located on the first floor of the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City. For more information on the exhibit, contact the Missouri State Museum office at 573-751-2854 or the Department of Natural Resources toll free at 800-334-6946 (voice) or 800-379-2419 (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf).
