ONONDAGA CAVE STATE PARK CELEBRATES
EARTHQUAKE AWARENESS WEEK FEB. 2 AND FEB. 9
JEFFERSON CITY, MO., JAN. 18, 2008 -- "The Earth Moves Under Our Feet," an event in recognition of Earthquake Awareness Week, will be held at Onondaga Cave State Park near Leasburg on Feb. 2 and Feb. 9. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the events will take place from 10 a.m. and noon each day in the park's visitor center. Both events are free and open to the public.
The site's visitor center will open at 10 a.m. with displays relating to earthquakes for visitors to explore. At 10:30 a.m., the video "Hidden Fury: The New Madrid Seismic Zone" will be shown. The New Madrid Seismic Zone is the nearest significant earthquake threat in the area of the park. At 11 a.m., a naturalist will present a program on the effects earthquakes have had on the land and human populations in the past, as well as earthquake preparedness. The program will include an introduction to the park's seismic station, known as CCM (Cathedral Cave, Mo).
Onondaga Cave State Park is located seven miles southeast of the Leasburg exit off of Interstate 44 on Highway H.
