INFORMATIONAL MEETING IS NOV. 5 AT PERSHING STATE PARK

JEFFERSON CITY, MO., OCT. 22, 2007 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will hold an informational meeting on Monday, Nov. 5, to discuss a project to prevent a cutoff branch from Locust Creek into Higgins Ditch from worsening at Pershing State Park in Linn County. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the department's Brookfield District Office, located at 600 West Lockling in Brookfield and the public is invited.

Representatives from the Department of Natural Resources' Division of State Parks, Missouri Department of Transportation, Missouri Department of Conservation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service will be on hand to present information and answer questions regarding the current project and future projects in the Locust Creek watershed. The purpose of the current project is to temporarily correct the loss of water from Locust Creek to Higgins Ditch. If not addressed, the pirating of water from Locust Creek would have had an adverse effect on the park, the U.S. Highway 36 bridges in the vicinity and adjacent farmland. Visitors are invited to share thoughts and comments on the proposed project and future projects in the watershed.

The informational meeting is part of an ongoing effort by the department to ensure that the public has input on projects and services in state parks and historic sites.

People requiring special services or accommodations to attend the meeting can make arrangements by calling the Brookfield District Office directly at 660-258-7496 or by calling the department toll free at 800-344-6946 (voice) or 800-379-2419 (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf).
