STORYTELLING PROGRAM IS OCT. 27
AT NATHAN BOONE HOMESTEAD STATE HISTORIC SITE
JEFFERSON CITY, MO., OCT. 12, 2007 -- Find out what is "Hidin' in the Haw Bushes" during a campfire storytelling program to be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site near Ash Grove. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the program is 7 to 9 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
The evening will begin with a special program in the Boone home on Ozark death and burial practices. Then, gather around the campfire where local storytellers Champ Herren and Todd Wilkinson will reveal what's "Hidin' in the Haw Bushes." Their program includes Ozarks legends, folklore and tales of the supernatural. Herren and Wilkinson examine the unique history and culture of the Ozarks region through superstition, customs, legends and humor. The program is based on the writings of Vance Randolph and other noted Ozark folklorists. Refreshments will be served. Visitors should remember to dress warmly.
Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site preserves the last home and grave of Missouri frontiersman Nathan Boone. Boone and his generation brought the stories and superstitions of their old homes to the Missouri Ozarks, where they still thrive today. The historic site is located 1.5 miles north of Ash Grove on State Highway V.
