FALL FUN ACTIVITIES PLANNED IN
MISSOURI STATE PARKS AND STATE HISTORIC SITES
JEFFERSON CITY, MO., OCT. 4, 2007 -- Enjoy an evening of spooky stories or learn about creatures of the night in Missouri state parks and historic sites. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the events are open to the public. The following state parks and historic sites are hosting fall or Halloween-related activities:
- Oct. 19 -- Halloween Storytelling, Bollinger Mill State Historic Site, Burfordville, 573-243-4591. Come to the site's picnic area at 7 p.m. for a "spook-tacular" time listening to scary stories for all ages around a bonfire. Please bring your lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. Refreshments of cider and cookies will be provided.
- Oct. 19 -- Monsters and Marshmallows, First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site, St. Charles, 636-940-3322. Listen to stories (some spooky, some not), prepare s'mores over a campfire and dress in your best costume to compete for prizes. The event will take place from 7 to 9 p.m.
- Oct. 20 -- Haunted Underground, Onondaga Cave State Park, Leasburg, 573-245-6576. For a small fee, you will be led through part of Onondaga Cave to listen to true and not-so-true "haunted underground" stories, including stories about Onondaga Cave as well as other local and Missouri underground haunts. Space is limited. Reservations are recommended but not required. Tours begin at 7:30 p.m.
- Oct. 26 -- Ha Ha Haunt, Ha Ha Tonka State Park, Camdenton, 573-346-2986. Spring Trail will be decorated and lined with about 100 jack-o-lanterns carved by Camdenton Elementary School students. Follow them to the mill shelter where you can enjoy a beanbag toss with prizes and treats, including s'mores. Park in the parking lot next to the lake. This event runs from 5 to 8 p.m.
- Oct. 27 -- Creatures of the Night, Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park, Wildwood, 636-458-3813. Learn about ghosts of the past on an interactive walk through the park's historic stables. There will be games, crafts and activities for the entire family from 7 to 9 p.m.
- Oct. 27 -- A Haunting at the Montauk Mill, Montauk State Park, Salem, 573-548-2201. The past will come to life at the old Montauk gristmill. Beginning at 6:30 p.m., you can see bats, hear voices and see images of ghosts from the past. Hear lingering voices of Ozark pioneers and see mysteries of the deep.
