FALL HIKE IS OCT. 20 AT MERAMEC STATE PARK
JEFFERSON CITY, MO., OCT. 4, 2007 -- See fall's golden colors, wildflowers and animals on a guided hike Oct. 20 at Meramec State Park in Sullivan. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the hike will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public.
In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Missouri Natural Areas Program, you can join a park naturalist on a three-mile hike through the river bottoms and glades that make up part of the park's Meramec Mosaic Natural Area. Explore the rich diversity of natural communities in this 831-acre tract, including the fall wildflowers and animals that live there -- some of which are quite rare. Participants should meet in the lobby of the park's visitor center, wear comfortable hiking shoes, dress for the weather and bring along water and a lunch or snacks. Guests may also want to bring a hiking stick, a camera and binoculars.
The 30th anniversary of the Missouri Natural Areas Program is being celebrated in 2007. Through this cooperative program, state and federal agencies, private organizations and private landowners work together to protect natural areas, the best of what is left of our state's natural heritage. The Department of Natural Resources owns or manages 41 natural areas and is involved in major landscape restoration projects to preserve and interpret forests, woodlands, savanna, prairie, glades, wetlands and caves in Missouri state parks.
