ANNUAL FESTIVAL IS SEPT. 15 AT
NATHAN BOONE HOMESTEAD STATE HISTORIC SITE

JEFFERSON CITY, MO., AUG. 31, 2007 -- Visitors to Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site's annual Nathan Boone Homestead Days Festival Sept. 15 and 16 can make a little history. The living history festival will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the event is free and open to the public.

Activities will include demonstrations of early 19th century crafts and Ozark agriculture. Living history camps will represent Nathan Boone's careers as a hunter, soldier, farmer, politician, explorer, businessman and scout. Children will have a chance to take on the role of Nathan Boone and face five interactive challenges representing chapters in the Missouri frontiersman's life.

A candlelight tour will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday and will offer a glimpse into the lives of the Boones in Greene County. The tour will focus on the visit of renowned historian Lyman Copeland Draper to Greene County in 1851. The interviews conducted by Draper are some of the most accurate and exciting accounts of the adventures of Nathan's legendary father Daniel Boone. Visitors should preregister for the tour by calling the site.

Sunday's activities will include a 19th century style church service, farm and craft demonstrations, and living history encampments. Volunteer interpreters and site staff will be available both days to answer questions.

Visitors can enjoy hot food provided by Slagle Creek BBQ in the site's picnic area, and they can work off their meal with a hike through the site's 400 acres of grasslands and woods. Live traditional music will be performed both Saturday and Sunday by the Camp Followers Band.

Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site is located 1.5 miles north of Ash Grove on Highway V. The historic site preserves the last home and grave of Nathan Boone.
