INFORMATIONAL MEETING AND ASTRONOMY PROGRAM IS
SEPT. 15 AT BATTLE OF ATHENS STATE HISTORIC SITE

JEFFERSON CITY, MO., AUG. 31, 2007 -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will hold an informational meeting on Saturday, Sept. 15, to discuss issues related to Battle of Athens and Iliniwek Village state historic sites in Clark County. The meeting will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the picnic shelter at Battle of Athens State Historic Site in Revere. Following the meeting, amateur astronomers will provide a tour through the evening sky. The public is invited to both the meeting and program.

Representatives from the historic site will provide an overview of the two facilities and discuss recent projects and future improvements. Visitors will be given the opportunity to ask questions and comment on the facilities. A short slide show will provide insight into the history of these important sites. Artifacts from both sites will be on display at the meeting as well as scale models of an Iliniwek long house and round house. Both scale models are based on the actual archaeological investigations of two 17th century Indian houses at Iliniwek Village State Historic Site.

The astronomy portion of the evening will begin with a program at the shelter house, followed by sky viewing beginning at dark and continuing as long as clear night conditions last. Telescopes will be provided. Refreshments, including hot dogs, will be served.

The informational meeting is part of an ongoing effort by the department to make sure that the public has input on services provided in state parks and historic sites.

Battle of Athens State Historic Site is located 10 miles north of Kahoka on Highway 81, then four miles east on Highway CC. People requiring special services or accommodations to attend the meeting can make arrangements by calling the historic site directly at 660-877-3871 or by calling the department toll free at 800-334-6946 (voice) or 800-379-2419 (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf).
