EXHIBIT AND PROGRAM FEATURING THE SAC AND FOX INDIANS
TO BE HELD IN SEPTEMBER AT VAN METER STATE PARK
JEFFERSON CITY, MO, AUG. 16, 2007 -- Learn about the Sac and Fox Indians through an exhibit and a presentation on Sept. 22 at Van Meter State Park near Miami, Mo. The exhibit is entitled "Homeland: Northeast Missouri and the Sac and Fox Journey Home" and the presentation is on "Sac and Fox Migration through Northeast Missouri." Sponsored by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, both the exhibit and the program will be featured in Missouri's American Indian Cultural Center at the park and both are free and open to the public.
The northeast Missouri area was the winter homeland of the Sac and Fox tribes. The exhibit will feature "The Story of the Twelve Boys," a Sac and Fox creation story, and will be on display from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31. It was produced in partnership with the Sac and Fox people, Missouri Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Missouri's American Indian Cultural Center's hours in September are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. In October, it is open Thursday through Sunday and holiday Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The program will begin at 10 a.m. on Sept. 21. Representatives from the Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska and the Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma will be on hand to answer questions and discuss their tribal migration routes from Canada through the Great Lakes region, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and the Platte Purchase area of Missouri.
