State Park Ranger Program
800-334-6946

Salary and Benefits

Salaries
Salaries are comparable to other state law enforcement agencies.

Vacation
Each ranger receives 10 hours of paid vacation each month. Vacation may be accrued up to a maximum of 240 hours. Additional hours of vacation are earned as the ranger's length of service increases. The maximum number of hours accrued also increases as the ranger's length of service increases.

Sick Leave
Each ranger receives 10 hours of sick leave each month. There is no maximum amount of leave that can be accrued. At the time of retirement, all unused sick leave may be converted into additional months of service used in calculating the ranger's retirement benefit.

Health Insurance
Individual and family health insurance is available from the Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan. Depending on the type of insurance plan chosen, most of the employee's insurance premium is paid by the state. The employee pays the entire premium for family coverage.

Life Insurance
There are several different types of life insurance provided by the state. All employees have a $ 15,000 whole life insurance policy. Employees are also eligible to purchase group term insurance. The employee chooses the amount of coverage they wish to purchase. Term insurance is also available to be purchased for members of the employee's family.

Holidays
Employees are granted 13 paid holidays per year.

Retirement
Rangers are covered under the Missouri State Retirement System. Employees become partially vested in the retirement system after working five years. Employees become fully vested after working 10 years. Employees are eligible for retirement after completing 30 years of service. Employees are also eligible for retirement when their age and the number of years of service reach 80. Employees 60 years of age with ten years of service and employees 65 years of age with five years of service are also eligible for retirement. The retirement benefit is based on a mathematical formula taking into account the highest average salary earned during the last three years of employment, multiplied by the number of years of service, multiplied by a constant. The constant is .025 if you retire before age 62. The constant drops back to .017 after age 62.

Uniforms and Equipment
The department provides all uniforms and equipment to the employee with the exception of footwear. The employee is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of uniforms and equipment.

Vehicles
Rangers are provided a take-home vehicle as long as they live within 25 minutes of their assigned facility.

Rangers are subject to call-out 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Deferred Compensation
Rangers are eligible to participate in the state's deferred compensation program. Money is deducted from the employee's check before taxes and invested tax free until the money is withdrawn at retirement. The state of Missouri will match the first $25 an employee contributes to this plan.
