More than two dogs in your camping party?
Missouri's state parks and state historic sites are great places to enjoy a night of camping while exploring natural, cultural and other recreational resources. To ensure the use of these resources for years to come, attention must be paid to the impact left on the facilities and environment.
The capacity limit of up to six persons per campsite helps limit the impact on the resources and ensures a quality camping experience. The new allowance of up to two dogs per campsite is a continuation of that effort to reduce the impact on natural resources, assist with noise control and reduce the amount of waste left behind.
Requesting an Exemption
Campers who would like to bring more than two dogs may apply for an exemption. Understanding that dogs are considered a part of many camping families, this provides an opportunity for committed dog owners to continue camping in the state park system. Service animals used by persons with disabilities are automatically exempt from the two-dog limit.
Requests for exemption should be addressed to:
Missouri Department of Natural Resources
Division of State Parks
Customer Service Office
P.O. Box 176
Jefferson City, MO 65102
The letter of request should include:
--the number of dogs the party normally brings camping
--a copy of any certifications as listed in the criteria below
--any other information or affiliations on the dog(s) for consideration
At least one of the following criteria must be met:
| current year participation in dog shows (conformation, obedience, agility, etc.) | |
| current membership in an American Kennel Club-affiliated dog club --Information on joining a club can be found at www.akc.org/clubs/ |
|
| certification of dog as a Canine Good Citizen (issued through the American Kennel Club) --This is a certification program designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. Information on certifying your dog can be found at www.akc.org/events/cgc/ |
|
| certification of dog as a therapy animal through Therapy Dogs International, Inc. or comparable organization | |
| dog currently in training to be certified as a service animal for persons with disabilities | |
| trained search and rescue dog, through Working Dogs International, American Rescue Dog Association or comparable organization | |
| trained law enforcement dog |
Upon receipt and review of the request, a letter of exemption or denial will be issued by the director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' Division of State Parks. Approved exemptions are valid for one calendar year, and the letter must be shown to campground staff at the beginning of each camping stay for verification.
Following all park system rules will ensure continuation of this privilege and leave a positive impression for all pet owners.
